NAEMT Supports EMSC, Recommends Antibiotics for First Responders and Families in Anthrax Attack

Feb 25, 2009

In our ongoing effort to support EMS practitioners and patients, NAEMT went on record in support of two important issues:

  • We sent a letter in support of the Wakefield Act (H. R. 479), a bill to reauthorize the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program. This federally funded program marks its 25th anniversary of driving fundamental changes in our nation's emergency medical system to improve emergency care for children. It is the only federal program to do so. Since the program was established, death rates due to pediatric injury have dropped by 40 percent. The Wakefield Ace would authorize the EMSC program to continue its vital work for five more years.
  • We have recommended to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that first responders and their families be given immediate access to antibiotics prior to a possible Anthrax attack as the best way to protect first responders and assure that they are optimally available to stay or be called into service.
