EMS Practitioners Represented at Key National Meetings

Jul 06, 2009

NAEMT advocates for its members through representation at key national meetings at which EMS issues are discussed. Recent meetings that NAEMT representatives attended included:

  • In May, Past President Nathan Williams represented NAEMT at the International Association of Fire Chiefs EMS Section Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Also in May, NAEMT Treasurer Rick Ellis participated in a FEMA Emergency Management Institute focus group on future course development. The Institute’s mission is to prepare emergency managers at all levels of government to better perform their responsibilities. The focus group reviewed current programs and provided insight and suggestions for future course offerings.
  • In June, President Patrick Moore represented NAEMT at the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate. The Directorate, in partnership with the private sector, national laboratories, universities, and other government agencies (domestic and foreign), helps drive development and the use of high technology in support of homeland security.
  • Also in June, NAEMT Immediate Past President Jerry Johnston attended the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Emergency Care Enterprise meeting. This meeting provided an opportunity to examine the progress that has been made since the release of the IOM reports recommending that our nation move toward "regionalized, coordinated and accountable" emergency care. Issues discussed included ending emergency department boarding and diversion, the development of regionalized systems, designation of a lead federal agency, strengthening pediatric emergency care, and improving organization and funding of emergency care research
  • Johnston also represented NAEMT at the National Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (NEMSAC) and the Federal Interagency Committee on Emergency Medical Services (FICEMS) meetings.  For more information on NEMSAC and FICEMS, go to the www.ems.gov
  • Tommy Loyacono represented NAEMT at the meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
