Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) can improve survival in some injured patients. However, patients transported by HEMS with non-time-sensitive injuries can lead to costly overtriage. The authors of this study evaluated the HEMS services in North Carolina, assessed system performance, and analyzed opportunities for reduction.
