NAEMT Supports New York Times Editorial on EMS Pay Equity

Sep 25, 2019

The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians is pleased to see the New York Times Editorial published on September 21, 2019.

  • NAEMT first published our position advocating for fair and equitable pay and benefits for EMS practitioners on parity with their partners in public safety and other allied health in January 2010.
  • While we recognize and value the work that is provided by our fellow public safety counterparts, we strongly support compensation for EMS practitioners that recognizes the value of the role our nation’s EMS practitioners play as front line healthcare safety net providers.
  • We also support a healthcare reimbursement strategy that recognizes the valuable role EMS practitioners play in our country.
  • Medicare, Medicaid and many other third party payers reimburse ambulance agencies at a rate that is less than the cost of providing vital EMS services.
  • We encourage EMS practitioners, payers, policy makers, patients and the communities EMS serve to work collaboratively to transform the reimbursement model for EMS recognizing the value EMS brings to our patients, our communities and the healthcare system.
